How to check a Samsung phone is official in Nepal
To check that a Samsung phone is official in Nepal, dial *#06# to see its IMEI, enter that number on NTA's MDMS site (mdms.nta.gov.np), and buy only with a VAT bill and a Samsung warranty card from an authorised seller. Each step takes a minute, and together they protect your warranty and your access to mobile networks.

Why it matters
The warranty. Samsung's warranty in Nepal covers phones imported by its authorised distributors. GadgetByte reports a one-year warranty, with six months on the battery, and that a Samsung phone bought abroad is not eligible.
The network. The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) runs the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS), a register of phone IMEI numbers. NTA says it is illegal to buy or sell an unregistered phone. It has cut phones off before: in November 2023 it deactivated SIM cards in 804 unregistered iPhone 15 units, after warning their owners by text message.
Enforcement since then has been patchy. Nepalitelecom reported in April 2026 that MDMS was not fully running and that NTA was blocking selected phones by hand through the operators. A grey phone that works today can still be blocked later, so do the check anyway.
How to check the IMEI in MDMS
- Find the IMEI. Dial *#06# on the phone. A dual-SIM phone has two IMEI numbers; check both.
- Compare it with the box. The IMEI on the box sticker should match the one on screen. If it does not, the phone and the box did not start out together.
- Open [mdms.nta.gov.np](https://mdms.nta.gov.np/). The page has two boxes: one checks a phone that is already in use, and the other checks a new phone before purchase, using the IMEI printed on its box.
- Enter the 15-digit IMEI and search. If the site does not show the phone as registered, do not buy it.
- Keep a screenshot of the result with your bill.
Phones brought from abroad for personal use and cleared at customs are registered automatically, according to NTA. If you brought a phone yourself and it is missing, use Individual Registration on the MDMS registration portal. You need your passport or citizenship, and the passport page with departure and arrival stamps or a boarding pass.
NTA has also offered paid registration for grey phones, with a higher fee for iPhones and phones costing more than 1 lakh (Nepalitelecom). Registering a grey phone only deals with the network. It does not give you a Samsung warranty in Nepal.
The official warranty and service network
Two companies distribute Samsung phones in Nepal. IMS has been Samsung's national distributor for mobile phones since 2001, and Him Electronics became a second distributor in 2016. Both run service centres.
IMS Care runs Samsung-authorised service centres. Its main centre is at Tamrakar Complex, New Road, Kathmandu, and it has others in Jawlakhel, Kamaladi, Gongabu, Bhaktapur, Pokhara, Butwal, Narayanghat, Nepalgunj, Dang, Dhangadi and Damauli. Him Electronics runs its own network; GadgetByte counts about eight centres.
GadgetByte lists Samsung's Nepal support line as 16600172667 (toll-free from NTC) or 9801572667 from Ncell, and 16600172667 on WhatsApp. Samsung has offered free pickup and drop for warranty repairs inside Kathmandu Valley; you need the warranty card, the VAT bill and a government ID.
IMS also sells the IMS Care Pack, currently listed for the Galaxy S25 series, which adds a year of cover for technical defects. It is only for handsets imported through the national distributor, must be bought within the original warranty with the original bill, and does not cover the battery.
Warning signs of a grey or refurbished phone
- The price is far below authorised sellers. Compare with our price list. Official prices include 13% VAT, so a large gap usually means no VAT bill and no Nepal warranty.
- No Samsung warranty card. The seller offers a 'shop warranty' instead, or a handwritten estimate instead of a VAT invoice.
- The IMEI does not check out. The box IMEI differs from *#06#, or MDMS does not show the phone as registered.
- The model number looks different. Settings > About phone shows it. Our product pages list the model number of each phone sold here, such as SM-S948B for the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. A match is not proof on its own, but a mismatch is a reason to ask questions.
- It has been used. The box seal is broken, the phone is already signed in to someone's account, or the frame and screen show wear. These point to a used or refurbished phone sold as new.
What to keep after you buy
- The VAT bill. Ask the seller to write the model and the IMEI on it.
- The warranty card, stamped and dated by the seller.
- The box, with its IMEI sticker. It helps with MDMS checks and lost-phone reports.
- The MDMS screenshot you took before paying.

Questions and answers
How do I check if a Samsung phone is registered in Nepal?
Dial *#06# to get the IMEI, then enter it at mdms.nta.gov.np. For a new phone, use the box that checks a phone before purchase. Check both IMEI numbers on a dual-SIM phone.
Is it illegal to use a grey phone in Nepal?
NTA says buying or selling an unregistered phone is illegal, and unregistered phones can be blocked from every mobile network in Nepal. Enforcement has been uneven, but blocking has happened, for example to grey iPhone 15 units in November 2023.
Does Samsung's warranty in Nepal cover a phone bought in Dubai or India?
No. GadgetByte reports that Samsung phones bought abroad are not eligible for the Nepal warranty. The warranty covers phones imported by Samsung's authorised distributors in Nepal.
I brought a phone from abroad. Do I need to register it?
If it was cleared at customs as a personal-use phone, NTA says it is registered automatically. Check it on MDMS. If it is not registered, use Individual Registration with your passport or citizenship and proof of travel.
Who are the official Samsung phone distributors in Nepal?
IMS, Samsung's national distributor for mobile phones since 2001, and Him Electronics, a second distributor since 2016. IMS sells through IMS SMart outlets; Him Electronics runs Samsung Plaza showrooms and samsungplaza.com.np.
Where is the main Samsung service centre in Kathmandu?
IMS Care's main Samsung-authorised centre is at Tamrakar Complex, New Road. There are others in Jawlakhel, Kamaladi, Gongabu and Bhaktapur inside the valley, and Him Electronics runs its own centres.
Does a registered IMEI mean the phone is new?
No. MDMS shows whether the IMEI is registered, not the phone's condition. Check the box seal, make sure the phone is not signed in to another account, and get a VAT bill and warranty card.
Can I check MDMS registration by SMS?
We could not confirm an SMS check on NTA's own pages, so we recommend the website NTA runs, mdms.nta.gov.np.
