How Samsung Plaza's EMI works

Samsung Plaza is the online store of Samsung's authorised distributor in Nepal. Its EMI is hire purchase through Hulas Finserv, its main financing partner, so the loan doesn't go on a card. These are the terms on Samsung Plaza's EMI page, which says they can change:

  • No credit card needed. You sign a hire-purchase agreement with Hulas Finserv at the showroom.
  • At least 40% down. The other 60% is split into monthly payments.
  • 0% interest over 3, 6, 9 or 12 months. Over 12 months you pay the phone's price and nothing more in interest.
  • 24 months at 7.99% interest on selected phones, and on other products that cost more than 50,000 rupees.
  • Minimum price: 25,000 rupees for a phone, 30,000 rupees for a home appliance.
  • Approval in about an hour after you hand in your documents, Samsung Plaza says.

Documents you need

  • A photocopy of your citizenship certificate, and one of your guarantor's.
  • Passport-size photos of you and your guarantor.
  • Office details for both of you, which Hulas Finserv uses to verify you.
  • An active mobile number registered in your own name. Samsung Plaza says this is mandatory.

Step by step

  1. Choose your phone at a Samsung Plaza showroom.
  2. Agree the down payment (at least 40%) and the number of months.
  3. Hand in your and your guarantor's documents.
  4. Wait for approval, usually within an hour.
  5. Pay the down payment at the store.
  6. Collect the phone from the store. Appliances are delivered to you.
  7. Pay each month's instalment to Hulas Finserv.

EMI on a credit card

Samsung Plaza also sells on EMI through partner banks, such as Global IME Bank. You need that bank's credit card and you apply through the bank, which sets its own terms. Samsung Plaza hands over the product once it receives the bank's delivery order.

Before you sign

  • Ask for the total you will pay. On a 0% plan it should be the price itself. Ask whether there is any processing or file fee on top.
  • On the 24-month plan, ask how the 7.99% is charged. Samsung Plaza's page doesn't say whether it is a yearly rate or for the whole term, so ask for the monthly amount and the total in writing.
  • Compare with the cash price. Samsung Plaza says EMI purchases can have their own offers, so check both prices.
  • Check the phone is official. Make sure its IMEI is registered with the Nepal Telecommunications Authority: see how to check a Samsung phone is official.

Where to apply

It lists 14: nine in the Kathmandu Valley (Durbarmarg, Khusibu Nayabazar, Baneshwor, Bouddha, Maharajgunj, Pulchowk, Kumaripati, Bhaisepati and Suryabinayak in Bhaktapur) and one each in Dharan, Birtamode, Gaighat, Narayangadh and Pokhara.
